Virg gets in; Dem prospects improve

2/8/2010 12:20 PM

This morning, the field of avowed Democrats in the race for governor grows by one, now to include Virg Bernero. It's a moment the Republican Party was apparently preparing for, since after his last State of the City address it's spokespeople launched what might be the least effective response to any address given by any elected official in the history of the Republic. There's good reason for that. Bernero has two things going for him that potentially could give Republicans fits this campaign cycle. The first is his municipal...

Feds Planning Intermittent Lock Closures to Fight Asian Carp

2/8/2010 5:35 PM

For some reason I don't think this will do it, but give it a try. $78 million worth of something has to be better than nothing. Plans include intermittent lock closures, which could begin by the end of April, and adding more crews to hunt down and destroy Asian carp before large numbers of them can make it into the Great Lakes. The battery of techniques they plan to use includes sonar equipment, electro-shocking, netting, and expedited testing for carp DNA. They'll spend $3 million to make the ugly, voracious fish attractive as fish...

WOW, now there’s a novel concept. From the Phoenix Business Journal: A state budget plan approved Saturday cuts money for universities, community colleges, children???s services, school construction and economic development and likely will require furloughs and reduced work schedules for state employees. The budget package, passed by the Legislature and signed by [REPUBLICAN] Gov. Jan Brewer, covers [...]

Lookin' Back, Movin' Forward: The End of MediaMouse.org

6/23/2009 5:11 PM

Almost ten years ago, a group of people fed up with the way things were going in the world and in Grand Rapids, Michigan started meeting. Inspired by the excitement surrounding the World Trade Organization (WTO) summit in Seattle, Media Mouse formed as a group that sought to distribute information about under reported issues--globalization, corporate control, Latin America, and U.S. imperialism--to name just a few. In the early years, that meant organizing a wide variety of campaigns and projects--protests, independent media festivals,...

Murtha succession will be competitive

2/8/2010 4:50 PM

From NBC's Mark MurrayAccording to Pennsylvania's Secretary of State's office, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) has 10 days to set a date for a special election to fill the remainder of John Murtha's term. That date cannot come any sooner than 60 days after issuing this writ of election -- so the earliest that it could occur is in two months. To save money, it is possible that Rendell decides to wrap this special election into the state's already-scheduled May 18 primary elections. (So you could...(read more)

A Valentine Story: Republicans + Teabaggers

2/3/2010 1:13 PM

I've always felt that teabagger candidates and protesters were out of touch with mainstream Americans, but now we have a poll showing just how far off the cliff they've fallen. Or, as this HuffPo article put it, this DKos/Research 2000 poll of more than 2,000 self-identified Republican voters illustrates the incredible paranoia enveloping the party. Some results: 39 percent of Republicans believe Obama should be impeached, 29 percent are not sure, 32 percent said he should not be voted out of office.36 percent of Republicans believe Obama was...

Rick Snyder Super Bowl Political Ad

2/7/2010 11:01 PM

I just caught the Rick Snyder ad. It's slick. I'll take a look at the plan on his site and see if he actually has details for a change beyond platitudes and company line talk "Reinvent" etc. Apparently it did its job of getting noticed considering how many people are looking at my archives and the two Rick Snyder posts there. Obviously, I'm not a supporter of Mr. Snyder.I do not support Rick Snyder, and these two posts explain why. I wasn't happy with Gateway's products, the outsourcing of jobs from America to other counties during his tenure...

A Teabagger In the Crowd!

8/2/2009 1:55 PM

It amazes me how real life can play out years or decades ahead of time in the movies. It was only a year and a half ago that I watched the film A Face in the Crowd for the first time. A classic movie directed by Elia Kazan, who you may remember also directed many other socially relevant films such as On the Waterfront, and East of Eden. The film takes place in the 1950's during the heyday of radio, and the beginnings of television. Its main focus was a character named Lonesome Rhodes as played by a youngish Andy Griffith. Griffith was...
